Tale of two San Jose cats — one loves water, one doesn’t
Expensive JOAN: We have two cats — a Maine coon female and an orange tabby male. We adopted them at the exact same time, and they are about 3 years previous. We adore them each to parts, but are curious about their different reactions to h2o.
The tabby provides us the stink eye if he receives his toes or any other section of his body damp. We have experimented with to bathe him and hardly escaped with our lives. The Maine coon is the exact reverse. We can give her baths, clean her facial area, clean up off her paws and she just purrs away.
Right until we bought her, we constantly thought that cats hated h2o, but probably we were mistaken. Our question is: Which cat is the odd just one, the a person who hates water or the one who enjoys it?
Liz and Joe, San Jose
Expensive LIZ AND JOE: Neither of them.
Even though most cats do not like being in h2o, some of them not only tolerate it but will fortunately submerge by themselves in it.
The adore/hate gene appears to be breed precise — Maine coons are recognised for possessing a h2o tolerance — but it is most likely additional honest to say it just is dependent on the cat. I’ve experienced a Maine coon and he was Zen about a lot of matters, but he was not also keen on h2o.
Researchers aren’t confident why most cats have these kinds of a dislike for water. It could be a portion of their origin story, owning roots in the desert.
Cats also like to be grounded, no pun supposed, and they really don’t like nearly anything in which they cannot get reliable order or sink their claws into.
An additional rationale for a cat’s dislike of drinking water could be for the reason that of their lavish fur coats. If you’ve at any time rankled a cat by petting in opposition to the grain, you will know that they like their fur to go a specific direction, and water can mess that up. Their coats also ended up not designed to get rid of water, so the fur soaks it up, building it a very weighty load to carry.
Acknowledge that a person cat is a water-loving rarity, though the other cat is basically usual, though the two, I’m sure, are assuredly adorable.
Expensive JOAN: The Rowell Ranch Rodeo is scheduled for May well 20-22 this calendar year. All the opposition notwithstanding, they once again plan to feature the brutal — and blatantly sexist — “wild cow milking contest,” in which a cow was killed at the 2014 rodeo.
The Hayward Space Recreation and Park District board refuses to make any alterations in its rodeo animal welfare policy. This cruel function requirements to be banned by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors right before the Might rodeo. The June Livermore Rodeo also options to feature this similar event.
Remember to shine a shiny gentle on this injustice. It is our moral obligation to aid the innocent.
Michelle Setaro, Modesto
Pricey MICHELLE: The very first protests of rodeos as cruel to animals were being introduced in the 1870s, and it took till the mid 20th century ahead of any protective rules were being enacted. Critics say even the more latest rules never go far enough.
The wild cow milking contest involves a crew that ropes and milks a cow that is not utilized to becoming handled. Some men and women discover it amusing and harmless, but if you are a person who does not, allow your elected officers know.
